Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award Project

Orientation and mobility has always been difficult for people living with blindness or partial sight, especially in an urban city as dense as Singapore. While they are able to depend on their walking canes to travel independently, they are unable to detect obstacles at or above knee level. Navigating around a rapidly modernising cityscape packed with busy streets is always a challenge in and of itself, even more so when traveling alone in an unfamiliar area they are unaccustomed to. With the amount of tall or suspended obstacles in Singapore, from signboards to overhanging tree branches, every daily commute continues to pose a challenge to the visually impaired.

This project presents a complementary solution of obstacle detection for the visually impaired through the use of a low cost wearable device and have been awarded the Gold award.
